“The neurodivergent mind is not to be relegated to the shadows. It is to be explored in full color.”- Cristi López
López’s first major solo presentation includes 15 new paintings that consider the artist’s intimate relationship with her mental health, specifically her obsessive compulsive disorder.
López, a first-generation American of Dominican, Spanish, and Cuban descent, creates intricate compositions of female figures that evoke a sense of duality and intimacy. For the works in “Unravel: Portraits of My Obsessions,” López drew inspiration from Symbolist painters such as Klimt, Kahlo, and Redon, as well as the works of Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele, adopting similarly sharp angular poses and a bold, expressive use of line. She also nods to Catholic iconography and Dominican folk art.
